What PTO and PTI mean
Two shafts, and which way the power goes through them. They are independent of each other — a machine can have either, both or neither.
PTO — Power take-off
Power out of the gearbox: a second output, turned by the main engine, that drives something else on board.
One engine does two jobs, so what it drives - a shaft generator, a hydraulic pump, a fire pump - runs without starting an auxiliary engine for it.
PTI — Power take-in
Power into the gearbox: a second input, so an electric motor can turn the propeller through the same box.
Slow speeds and harbour manoeuvring on the motor alone, and a way home if the main engine stops.
